In 1858, in the Jewish quarter of Bologna, the Pope's soldiers broke into the home of the Mortara family. By order of the cardinal, they came to get Edgardo, the Mortara’s seven-year-old son. According to the statements of a maid, the child had been secretly baptized at the age of six months when he was believed to be on the verge of death. Papal law is final: the boy must receive a Catholic education. In shock, Edgardo's parents try everything to get their son back. Supported by public opinion and the international Jewish community, the Mortara’s battle soon took on a political dimension. But the Pope would not agree to return the child. As Edgardo grew up in the Catholic faith, the temporal power of the Church was declining and Savoy troops conquered Rome.
